Does Elvis Sing?

29 Aug 2022

First, there was Elvis. He was Cheeru’s first friend in this place and I suspect he is still her favourite. Or perhaps Dude is her favourite. Do dogs have “favourites”?

Chaita and her avatars

At first, she was called the "site dog", who then became Sita or Syta and then the S softened to a Ch, just as our hearts softened for her. Thus she became Chaita and this is her story.

Play, love, friendships and rules

Here we have a lovely video of three of the farmies engaged in play. How about a close examination and an analysis.

Giving dogs space to disagree gracefully

3 Jan 2023

What does respectful disagreement look like in dogs. Do we give our dogs opportunity to learn this? We focus so much on teaching dogs how to play, that we forget that healthy social relationships are also about knowing how to decline play and how and when to walk away from it.

Dog Knows book

Dogs are usually thought of as obedient, loyal animals, but we don’t always pay attention to their wide range of personality attributes and vast repertoire of communication signals. Dogs not only have advanced and nuanced ways of reaching out to other members of their own species but have evolved specialized skills to ‘converse’ with humans as well.

Dog Knows documents the journeys of several dogs, helping us decode the rich, complex social and emotional lives of dogs. What does it mean when a dog is not making eye contact, or is growling softly? How do street dogs learn to cope with fear, or pick up community skills – and how can our pet dogs learn the same?

“The markedly different approach that Sindhoor offers, compared to other dog books in the market, sends out a clear and understandable message. The book mirrors the changing times, wherein the world is taking a more ethical and accepting view of animals and focusing their well-being, something that is often missing in traditional dog training.”

Collars damage lymph nodes in the neck | Ditch the collar E01 | bharcs.com

Collars damage lymph nodes in the neck In this new series, we are going to bust some common myths around collars and harnesses so you can make the right choice for your dogs. . Do harnesses “pinch” lymph nodes in the “underarm” area of a dog and harm them? Should you put your dogs on collars instead to safeguard these areas? . This is a very misrepresented argument that implies that lymph nodes only exist in the underarm area, and that the neck doesn’t have any important organs or lymph nodes that collars can harm. . From food and wind pipes, voice box, thyroid gland, blood veins and arteries, thymus gland - among many other essentials, the neck houses them all. To make things worse, it is very vulnerable and unprotected by skeletal structures. . Watch this video to understand how lymph nodes work, the importance of protecting the neck, and the damage caused by pulling on a leash. . If your dog pulls on walks, we have a workshop called Canine Essential 101 that addresses these issues and helps you communicate with your dog better. Another reason why we do not recommend collars and prefer harnesses is because they negatively impact a dog’s vertebra. . The vertebra is a chain like structure made of bones or bone segments that are interlocked. They start from the base of the skull to the end of the tail. . Because this column is a chain-like structure and not a solid one, they can slip out of place. . The column also has a tunnel-like opening running through it, where the spinal cord sits. The spinal cord connects to the brain. Individual nerves exit the spinal cord and vertebra, through gaps between the segments of the vertebra. When the segments of the vertebra gets pushed, it can pinch these nerves. . You’re unlikely to see much of this even on an Xray. Your dog could be in pain for a long time and you may not even see it! . The scariest part is a single whiplash can be very damaging. . Ditch the collar. If you have any questions, ask us - we would love to hear from you! . #dogharness #puppyharness #harness #harnesses #dogharnesses #collar #dogcollar #turidrugaas #BHARCSeducation #learningfromdogs #petparents #doghumanrelationship #canineessential101 #dogschool #longleashwalking #dogbehaviour #doghumanrelationship #dogsarefamily #caninecommunication #intelligentdogs #enlightenedbydogs #doglanguage #dogcommunication #animalconnection #turidsway #talkingdogs #haqihana #canineeducation #canineeducators #canioneeducatorsofindia

Another reason why we do not recommend collars and prefer harnesses is because they could damage and/or cause a fracture in the dog’s hyoid bone. Once this bone is damaged there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s irreversible. . The tongue bone or the hyoid bone is a rather thin bone that sits in the upper portion of the neck. This is where you’re likely to put the slip lead or the choke collar. It’s a delicate bone and easily damaged. . What happens when the tongue bone is damaged? As you can imagine it would make it uncomfortable for the dog to swallow and eat. But did you know it plays a role in a dog’s balance? . Yes, the tongue bone plays a role in maintaining balance. And if the dog isn’t able to move the tongue freely, they are also unable to balance themselves properly. . As we’ve said it before, ditch the collar. If you have any questions about it, ask us - we would love to hear from you! . Can’t wait to bring more such videos to you.
